Disorienation...

follows the change in the clock every time it happens.

I now feel like going to bed as soon as it gets dark and after the sort of sound sleep that only Autumn can induce, I find it impossible to get up in the morning.

Watching the Dublin Marathon on TV today I was astounded at the energy of so many people as they headed out to run 40 kilometers in a light drizzle.

There's nowt as strange as folks... Garrya elliptica flowers in January

Where To Now?

The Autumn has brought the usual leaf fall that sends me out to tidy and clear daily. Not much time left over for literature as a result.
However, since the nights are dark, reading has replaced TV as the distraction of choice. The bookish people who now gather in little groups to hear writers read from their latest work are also good company. Last week we went to hear Alan Glynn read from "Bloodland", a complex thriller set on three continents. Paranoia fiction is seeing a revival, doubtless thanks to the psychological horrors being inflicted on unsuspecting citizens by corporations and governments worldwide.
It's nice to be tucked up indoors with a book that makes one think... Emerald Noir

Rev the Motors, It's Back to School Time

Old habits...
I still approach Autumn with a sense of excitement as I sharpen my virtual pencils and lay out a simple curriculum for the year to come. Since I left college almost forty years ago, it still amuses me to find that I instinctively line up books as if they were to be analysed for essay writing, or ... worse ... for discussion in seminars where everybody got a bit hot and bothered about meaning, syntax and their place within the literary canon.

Anyways, I have been told that a copy of "Down These Green Streets", orchestrated by the top crime and noir writers of my generation, awaits in the local library.

At last... a tome I can get my teeth into...
Or, for the purists... into which I can get my teeth. In the Chapel, Gougain Barra
