All the more reason to keep battling on here?
all the best.

There seems to be an endless stream of entertaining links there
and there is no strain when it comes to following other members.

Blogging seems so much like work, in comparison to the social network
systems. I have really been enjoying Facebook as well, though new
material is slower to upload there.

Just to show that I'm still keeping up with photography here is
a shot I took on our local street recently.

Photographe à Dublin,

At LastAfter a lot of soul searching and humming and hawing I worked out the security systems on Facebook and am comfortable there at last.

It may be a question of age, but it seems that younger people enjoy the Facebook experience more than I do and get more out of it. It seems to have improved in the last year and there are some good groups where one can share information and photos.
I have joined the Flickr group there and a very useful one on learning Modern Greek. It remains to be seen if I will persist over time. The ability to communicate with friends in real time, rather than wait for answers to emails, thanks to Chat is particularly pleasant. I dislike Skype and find it inefficient, although it's nice to catch up with news in person. It's taken an age to extend comfort zones to include social media, but things are improving.

It looks as if Facebook has replaced chat rooms in my case and I cannot imagine going back to places like Boards.ie. They had a major place in teaching how to compute, but now seem a bit old fashioned, replaced by Twitter in particular.

It will be interesting to see where I'll be at a year from now.

In the meantime, here's wishing all visitors here a very Happy Christmas.
Hurrah. I've worked out how to make live links again.
Months away from blogging have left me with less skills than before and a steep re-learning curve is about to be addressed.

There are now so many sites available for would-be bloggers. How to build and engage an audience is a constant concern.

At the moment I have little to say. So this site
Tips for Blogging
might prove useful.
Photographe à Dublin,
Many craft workers from the Design Tower congratulated one another on some very fine pieces that are for sale.

The venue is near Boland's Mill, at the end of Pearse Street and known to all Dubliners.

Live linking no longer works here, so just copy and paste the following for details:

http://www.waterwaysirelandvisitorcentre.org/events.aspx

The exhibition opens to the public on Thursday, 7th November and runs until the 30th.

Well worth a visit, if only to see the magical building suspended over the water.
There's a coffee shop next door for anybody who has walked to the venue.

Some time later...
I have just found a very good link to details of this exhibition by the organisers:

"It is not that I object to the work, mind you; I like work, it fascinates me.
I can sit and look at it for hours."

Jerome K. Jerome, I think, would enjoy the exhibition by the National Women's council of Ireland
that will run in Dublin until the end of this week.

It's a community project that requires some time to interpret.
I have been twice and this was necessary as it takes concentration to read and absorb the concepts being explored.

Fortunately, there is a free book available that is a very impressive production.
It should take several days for me to read it, as the text is quite dense and is founded on years of well thought out sociology of the place of women in society.

I was surprised to find that the concept is that women's work still remains unrecognised and is seen as perishable. I think that this is the case for millions of men on the Planet as well, but the fact is that women are in the majority in the Western world when it comes to the caring professions and in volunteering and do not get much notice.

That, however, is what I think most work is like.
It's only noticeable when it is not done.
I got cracking today and wrote a post about Alan Glynn's latest noir novel "Graveland" on "http://widgetinghour.blogspot.ie/".
(Live links seem to have died here.)

Hope somebody, somewhere finds it useful...
Photographe à Dublin,

I was so long away from blogging I had forgotten the br code that allows for paragraph formation which led to a long ramble on "The Widgeting Hour", now corrected.

Worse, a comment left on "Detectives Beyond Borders" has a mistake which is uncorrectable without going back again to apologise and explain. Frankly, I'm past caring as typos are useful in their own way and could offer some teacher somewhere the opportunity to ask students what the problem might be.

Blogging is not what it used to be. I don't feel any sense of making something new or important. Why even bother to mention that we went today to a plant sale where we chatted with other gardeners and came away with a few treasures that will fill the blank spots both out of doors and in the conservatory? I've just taken to uploading interesting links on Twitter, short, efficient with next to no possibility of wittering on and making typos.

So why blog?

It remains to be seen if this format is seriously out of date...
Photographe à Dublin,

Blogging had somehow run its course and the time since has been spent uploading photos to my Rosewoodoil account on Flickr. Somehow, laziness took over and there was a a sense of repeating what was already available, without need to add text or to think much about the images I was choosing to share.

However, it's nice to be back, even if it may mean chatting to myself for a while until I get back into the swing of blog keeping. I had no need to learn any new computing skills since the Summer of 2012 and sometimes it's pleasant to stay with the tried and tested.

Perhaps this all offers evidence of having found a comfort zone which should remain unchanged for some time to come?
Photographe à Dublin,
Recently we were welcomed to Marsh's Library, the oldest lending library in Ireland, which is now a repository for fine manuscripts and books of interest to anybody who likes antique printing techniques and etching.

We were allowed to photograph the beautiful botanical works on display, not using flash, of course.

Update...

Unfortunately, uploading photos taken in Marsh's Library turned out to be in breach of copyright. All photos taken there belong to the library and may not be published in any medium.

A reason for those interested to visit in person, perhaps?

May is a wonderful month in the garden. Despite the clouds drawing in after days of sizzling sunshine, there is a sparkle to the day as I look back on years of photographing flowers, trees and gardens.

After a short dalliance with a Canon Eos RT film camera (I returned it to the shop and traded it in for a Pentax Mz_7) I'm yet again on the lookout for a simple-to-use old Canon.

However, Pentax continues to steal my heart. There is something more magical about the photos taken with my two MZ models. The MZ-50 is generally regarded as a beginner's camera, but since it is so quick and simple to use, I'm not complaining
The conference, Images of the Garden: The French Garden as Cultural Palimpsest, brought experts from Britain, the Continent and the US and the lectures were inspirational in the extreme.

Such heady days have taken their toll and much sleep has been needed in order to process all the new information. I spent many happy hours sorting through photos and making up a little album to remind us of such a lively event.
We spent as much time as possible exploring the Botanic Gardens there last year and at last I uploaded six photos to Flickr today.

This magical grass is a favourite, mesmerising and a reminder of a warm day out of doors.

Just one trip there last year was enough to wish I could return again soon. However, rummaging in the special deals for places to stay reminds me of how travel is increasingly expensive and the thought of just staying home is quite attractive too.

Working on last year's photos is a pleasant form of virtual travel...

There is a link further down the page here directly to some past posts there.

I continue to send little pieces round to friends and now that Boards.ie seems to be back on an even keel, I'm happily posting some comments there as well.

Blogging continues to bemuse many of the over-fifties, but gradually the value of combining snappy pieces of writing with a photo is gaining popularity with my friends. It would be excellent if they took to blog writing as well as it's such a painless way of keeping in contact with those living far away.
Not travelling abroad this year has turned out to have many benefits, notably the time available to organise photo archives and think about projects for Summer. I continue to wish I could visit Italy more often, it is such a beautiful place.
I have the sense of having lived through so many social shifts, noticably the criminalisation of work, that I stay as focused as possible when thinking about all the demands and stresses on the individual that the weight of generations of law makers impose.

Perhaps this thought could help explain the astonishing popularity of crime writing in every genre which has dominated the popular publication industry for the past ten years in particular?

I was very pleased to be able to attend a seminar, with readings from new work, by Irish crime writers, in Maynooth recently. There was humour during the proceeding, but one tends to come away from such meetings with a strong sense of the seriousness of contemporary life. Ghost estates, which seem to be the most popular metaphor for the "Irish" way of doing things, were mentioned and while it is easy to point fingers at politicians, developers, builders and hacks working in the property pages of national media, there is also a question that could yet be answered... why do ordinary citizens not buy small plots of land and keep the ecological benefits of small holding management alive for generations yet to come? We have a small suburban garden and I am now interested in that strange, eerie movement, Guerrilla Gardening, where people plant trees and shrubs on abandoned estates in an effort to restore them to the natural balance that was there before they were excavated and rendered dangerous and empty of all life.

The latest question on the Internet... Is crime writing redundant?... may be controversial and give pause for thought but it seems to me that writers who tackle the difficult social issues of our day still have a lot to write about.

There should be many books yet to come...
And heres a comment for Peter Rozovsky on the subject of work and social control.

"I think that the crime boom is only getting into its stride.
The laws that surround the management of work forces worldwide alone could give an army of writers enough material for generations to come.
I still remember UB40 and wandering round with a P45 clutched in my frozen fingers as I tried to find work during the last recession.
Work is now so controlled by governments it is a wonder anybody bothers to go for it.

Darned if I know... but at least his post got me up and running with a response...

I'm tempted to wheel out that old chestnut... "what is Reality?"
All media are a form of art, floating above the real world in my view of things.
Photography is increasingly the medium I cling to when recording outings and I wonder if graphic novels may not be on the increase because readers like images so much more than words?
Just some lazy Sunday morning thoughts...
Photographe à Dublin,
