When travelling abroad, it is always assumed that
"The Irish" are a wildly nationalistic bunch.
I remember being almost reduced to tears by a retired French general
while a dinner conversation took a very unsavory turn
in relation to the "sad politics" of our little island.

I don't know how I managed to divert the conversation to some
light hearted subject, but the reminder that religion and politics
are disheartening subjects to accompany digestion is worth making.
